Sozopol's Beaches – A Tourist Guide
The Black Sea coast in the ancient city of Sozopol attracts thousands of visitors each year with its wide variety of beautiful coastal strips.
The combination of golden sand, clean sea waters, and excellent conditions for leisure turns the local city beaches into one of the most preferred and loved destinations on the Bulgarian Southern Black Sea coast.
From vibrant strips of modern entertainment to smaller, secluded coves among the rocks, the urban environment offers the perfect spot for relaxation within walking distance of hotels and guesthouses.
- Central Beach – located directly between the Old Town and the city park, it offers shallow and calm waters, a paid area with umbrellas and sun loungers, and numerous restaurants and cafes nearby. Due to its location, it is usually extremely lively throughout the day.
- Harmani Beach – located in the New Town, it features a much wider and longer sandy strip compared to the Central Beach. It has exceptionally developed infrastructure with a promenade, restaurants and discos, designated paid and free zones, and enjoys very high attendance.
- Sozopol's Budzhaka Beach is located in a small, secluded rocky bay at the very beginning of the Budzhaka Peninsula (the southern part of the town). It is characterised by a narrower sandy strip, offers a paid beach bar with umbrellas and sun loungers, and is a tad more secluded compared to the large city beaches.
Beaches near Sozopol – for those who enjoy a short walk
For visitors wishing to diversify their stay and who don't mind a short car journey or a walk, the area around the city reveals some of the most spacious and beautiful coastal strips along the entire Black Sea.
These nearby destinations offer the perfect escape from the urban grind, combining unique natural features with diverse opportunities for camping and water sports.
- Zlatna Ribka Beach – located about 2 kilometres north of Sozopol, within the campsite of the same name, it offers exceptionally shallow, calm and clean waters, food outlets and paid areas with umbrellas and sun loungers.
- Gradina beach – located a bit further north in the direction of Chernomorets town, it is a natural continuation of the bay and represents one of the largest sandy strips in the country, equipped with modern beach bars, paid zones, and extremely popular spots for camping and windsurfing.
- Kavatsi and Smokinya beaches – these two popular names actually denote a single, continuous sandy strip, located in a large and beautiful bay about 3 kilometres south of Sozopol. The division in names is entirely colloquial and comes from the two emblematic campsites located behind the sand – „Kavatsi“ in the northern part and „Smokinya“ in the southern part, with the entire area boasting paid sunshades, eateries, shallow waters, and beautiful sand dunes.
- Veselie beach – located just after the southern end of the Smokinya strip, in a small secluded bay below the eponymous campsite, it offers a more relaxed atmosphere, paid umbrellas, and less crowding.
- Aleppu Beach (driver's beach) – stretches for about 6-7 kilometres south of the city, in close proximity to the protected area of Aleppu Marsh, and is a completely wild, wide and secluded strip without establishments or tourist infrastructure.
Which is the best beach in Sozopol?
The question of the best place for sunbathing on the local coast doesn't have a single answer, as Sozopol boasts extremely diverse and beautiful beaches. Every visitor has individual criteria for a perfect holiday, and the geographical diversity around the town allows for the satisfaction of absolutely every taste – from comfort lovers to nature seekers.
For families with young children, Central Beach and Golden Fish Beach prove to be the most suitable. The shallow, calm waters, the absence of large waves in these bays, and the fine golden sand ensure maximum safety for the little ones, while the immediate proximity to the city park and restaurants makes it easier for parents to organise their day.
Lively groups of friends looking for thrills, music, and fun will find their ideal environment at Harmanite Beach and along the Garden and Smokinya beaches. These destinations are popular for their iconic beach bars, open-air discotheques, water sports and windsurfing opportunities, as well as their youthful and dynamic atmosphere.
Romantic couples looking to escape the noise often choose the secluded Bujaka Beach (commercially known as Bambu Beach) or the small cove of Veselie Beach. The beautiful rocky formations bordering the sand provide a more intimate setting, and nearby establishments offer secluded tables with panoramic views of the sea horizon.
For those who prefer complete seclusion, silence, and contact with untouched nature, Shofiorski Beach (Alepu) remains an unsurpassed choice. The absence of any commercial activity, umbrellas, establishments, and noisy crowds guarantees complete tranquility and the opportunity for seclusion against the backdrop of the sound of the waves.
A few tips for parking
Finding a parking space during the peak summer season requires advance planning, as traffic in the city is extremely heavy. Drivers must comply with the local municipality's rules and the specificities of different coastal areas.
- City Blue Zone – all streets around the Central Beach and Harmanite Beach fall within a paid zone for short-term stays, which is payable by SMS or via parking meters.
- For a longer stay in the city, it is best to use the large, paid, guarded municipal car parks (e.g. at the port or by the South Panoramic Alley), which offer daily rates.
- Parking outside the city – around Kavatsi, Smokinya and Garden beaches there is no Blue Zone, but parking is in private paid car parks or in designated free unpaved roads without entering the sand dunes.
- Bare beaches – when visiting Shofiorski Beach, cars are parked for free in the expanded asphalt lay-bys along the main road, parallel to the sandy strip.
Are there any nudist beaches in Sozopol
Fans of free, clothes-optional sunbathing will not find an officially designated nudist zone on the two main city beaches – Central and Harmani. In these locations, due to the high density of visitors, the presence of establishments, and developed family infrastructure, the practice is not tolerated.
Despite the lack of official status, several traditional destinations with a long history among the nudist community exist in the immediate vicinity of the town. The most popular such place is Shofiorski Beach (Alepu), where the distance from the urban environment and the absence of concessionaires allow for complete seclusion in the southern part of the strip.
A second unofficial zone is located at the southernmost end of Kavatsi Bay (in the vicinity of Veselie Beach), where natural rock formations provide a visual barrier and privacy from the mass tourist flow.
